CSAB Fellow Nomination Guide

Introduction

The CSAB Fellow designation may be awarded annually by the CSAB Board of Directors in recognition of individuals who have given sustained, quality service to the computing profession and to computing education through the activities of CSAB.

The CSAB Fellow Committee is responsible for evaluating all nominations submitted and to recommend a maximum of five candidates to the Board of Directors. Successful nominees (and their nominators) are informed of their selection in September and receive their Fellow pins at an awards ceremony held in at an appropriate venue, usually the fall meeting of the CSAB Board of Directors.

Nomination Deadline Date

The deadline for submission of nominations is the last Friday of May each year. The deadline applies both to the Nomination Form and to the Reference Forms.

Nominators and Their Basic Functions

Anyone who has served on the CSAB Board of Directors or any of its commissions or committees, or as an accreditation visitor may submit one or more nominations. Current members of the CSAB Board are not allowed to submit nominations.

Nominators are expected to follow the instructions contained in this document. Specifically, they must use the appropriate Fellow Nomination and Reference forms and adhere to space limitations in those forms.

All completed forms must reach CSAB Headquarters by the stated deadline date (last Friday of May).

Criteria

Recipients of the Fellow of CSAB award should be considered outstanding contributors to the computing profession and to computing education. To this end, any of the following criteria uniquely or in combination will be used in the selection process:

  • substantive contributions to CSAB including, but not limited to: improvement of the accreditation process; creative work at the interfaces between CSAB and its constituent societies; other accreditation agencies, universities, institutes, industry, government, and the public; or long-range leadership that positively affects computing education;
  • formal involvement in computing accreditation as a program evaluator, commission member, committee member, and/or representative director for a total of at least five years;
  • contributions to the criteria, policies, and/or procedures related to accreditation ,whether through CSAB, another accreditation entity with which CSAB has a formal relationship, or through participating society activity;
  • exemplary service to CSAB in a manner not described above.

Truly outstanding contributions in one of the areas listed may offset less significant contributions in others. Except in unusual circumstances, recognition is limited to currently active individuals, or not later than three years after an individual’s most recent formal CSAB involvement.

Fellow Nomination Form

This section contains suggestions for completing the CSAB Fellow Nomination Form. Attachments are not permitted.

  1. Personal Data: Provide complete and accurate information, without abbreviations, except for obvious abbreviations such as the names of states.
  2. Education: List degrees earned in chronological order with the most recent degree last. Use abbreviations, e.g., B.S. Ph.D., etc., as appropriate.
  3. Professional History: List positions held in chronological order, with the most recent position last.
  4. Proposed Citation: Specify the contributions of the nominee, using thirty or fewer words.
  5. Nominator: The nominator is expected to ascertain the accuracy and completeness of the form and to sign and date the CSAB Nomination Form.
  6. Individual Contributions: In succinct and clear terms, describe the contributions that distinguish the work of the candidate as outstanding, and most certainly above average. An important part of this description is an explanation of how the nominee’s contributions are considered to be of a quality that is above the norm for those serving the computing profession through CSAB.
  7. Tangible Evidence: List the nominee’s publications, conference or workshop presentations, or other tangible evidence of unique accomplishments in computing program accreditation.
  8. CSAB Activities: List CSAB Board or committee memberships, offices held, and service in computing program evaluation whether to CSAB or another accreditation entity with which CSAB has a formal relationship, together with the number of years served in each capacity. List in chronological order with the most recent activity last. For each of the areas designated below in which contributions have been made, describe briefly:
    • the specific activity and/or appointment;
    • the specific dates of service;
    • the specific responsibility (officer, committee chair, member, etc.)

    Please note that service as a designated member is different from service as an alternate or as an observer. Please be specific about the activity and the service.

    • CSAB Board of Directors
    • Computer Science Accreditation Commission
    • Committees of the CSAB Board of Directors
    • Other
  1. Non-CSAB Accreditation Activities: Describe program accreditation activities in the candidate’s professional society, e.g., ACM, IEEE-CS, AIS, etc. Such activities might include, for example, service on committees of a society that have a special interest in computing education.
  2. CSAB Fellow References: Each CSAB Fellow nomination must be supported by a minimum of three, but no more than five reference letters. At least two of the references must be submitted by CSAB Fellows. To ensure that at least three letters are received, it is recommended that the nominator solicit five references, with at least three of those from CSAB Fellows. The CSAB Fellow Committee will consider no more than five references.
  3. Persons eligible to serve as references include past CSAB Board members, CSAB committee members, past or present ABET commissioners and program evaluators (except as noted). Persons ineligible to serve as references include all present officers and members of the CSAB Board of Directors and present members of the CSAB Fellow Committee.
  4. The nominator should provide all persons submitting references with a copy of the completed nomination form as a source of information. The nominator must make certain that all persons submitting references are qualified to judge the candidate. The completed reference forms must be sent in order to be received by CSAB Headquarters by the last Friday in May.

Resubmission of Nomination

The CSAB Fellow Committee will reconsider the case of an unsuccessful candidate the year immediately following first submission, provided the nominator submits a letter to CSAB Headquarters requesting reconsideration and updating the nomination with new information. The new information should be no longer than one letter-size page. The nominator may choose the alternate option of submitting a completely new nomination with references.
